Gratitude is a must

Maybe I’ll be married to a painter, I’ll be his model. I’ll let him make art of me, on me and with me.

Maybe I’ll be married to a photographer, we’ll hang pieces of his work around our house. People will pay to see his work.

Maybe I’ll be married to a fashionista, we’ll run a fashion house that allows people to be true to who they are. We will make a statement only by how we dress.

Maybe I'll be married to a hair enthusiast, we'll have combined wash days and fight over moisturizer.

Maybe I’ll be married to a Latino, I’ll help legitimize his dirty money (I’m just kidding.)

Maybe I’ll be married to a cultured man, we’ll make our own traditions and pass them down to our children and their children and their children.

Maybe I’ll be married to a loyal man, I’ll give myself to no one else but him.

Maybe I’ll be married to a soldier, I’ll have my heart in my hands every time he goes to work. I don’t think I’ll be able to live with the thought of possibly not seeing him again every time he has to go to war/be on official duty or saying goodbye thinking it could be the last one!

But really, is any of us guaranteed that when we leave for work or other errands we will get back to our loved ones safe and sound? So many things could go wrong. Some people trip on the same stairs they’ve been using and lose the ability to walk. Others are choked on their own food and die. Others are involved in accidents while others are struggling with depression, addiction and so on.

We take so many things for granted. We forget to give thanks to God when we live to see another day, when we make dinner plans in the morning and everything goes well, when we plan for events/ vacations/ meet ups in advance and just assume that it’ll happen. When we assume that certain things are normal like being able to walk, talk, hear, see, naturally take in food or even have food to begin with, we are taking them for granted. The thought that it could be anyone unable to do any of these things, should make us humble, kind to one another and grateful.

I think one key way of not taking things for granted is by being grateful and actually saying thank you to God and to those around us.

Whatever you do, be kind to others. Acknowledge that what is normal for you is probably not for them. Whenever you can, make it your business to lend a helping hand and to make a positive impact in someone’s life. Realizing how blessed you are as a person gives you so much peace and satisfaction and only then will you be able to show gratitude.

As we celebrate Christmas and count our blessings, be someone’s blessing. Remember to give and share with those without.

Remember somebody somewhere is begging God for those same things you are taking for granted.

That’s it from me this week.
