I have trouble picking a favourite TLC song but if I had to choose one it would be 'Unpretty'. I watch the video like it is a movie every single time and even forget to sing along sometimes. Having gone through a period of not really loving myself or rather doing it intentionally, I feel devastated watching all of those people go through the same thing. It is more heartbreaking to see that sometimes the people that should be loving you or claim to love you are the ones that make you most uncomfortable in your body. Best line, 'if you can't look inside you and find out who am I to be in the position that made me feel so damn unpretty'
Samantha Mumba said, or sang in 'Don't need you to', 'I don't need to be part of somebody else to be complete.'
It is undeniable that at times, it may take another person to see your beauty for you to see it as well, and that is okay, but eventually, you will need to own it. You will need to see your beauty and believe in your worth even when everybody else stops seeing it.
Sometimes loving yourself looks like Karyn White's 'Superwoman'. Being able to stand up for yourself, speak your mind, know when you have reached your limit and realize when you are not getting what you are giving. Being able to say 'I love you but I love me too.' I like when she says, 'this girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you.'
When you can healthily love yourself, you will be able to feel 'good as hell' just like Lizzo. You will own the line ' My name is ck (insert your name or just use mine!), I'm so very fly oh my it's a little bit scary.' Ok, those are Keri Hilson's words in 'Pretty Girl Rock' but you get what I am saying. Last but not least, you will have a genuine answer to Beyonce's question in 'Pretty Hurts', 'When you are all by yourself, are you happy with yourself?' If your answer is no, then you haven't found the greatest love of all.
Whitney Houston put it best. Learn to love yourself, never walk in anybody's shadows and always find your strength in love. Strength to go on, strength to pick yourself up and strength to fight through difficult times. Then and only then will you have found the greatest love of all.
Remember, only after you love yourself will you be able to love others in a healthy way!
That’s it from me this week.
